Binghamton Sports Foundation

Our History:

The Broome Sports Foundation was created in 1986 by the owners of the Binghamton Whalers, the American Hockey League of the Hartford Whalers.  The owners were looking to benefit a local charity with an emphasis on the sport of ice hockey.  The Binghamton Whalers Charitable Fund was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and the New York State Not-For Profit Corporation Law.

Since then the Foundation has been renamed to reflect a broader “Foundation” than hockey, which remains the integral part of our existence.  The Foundation is involved in many charitable activities, including Scholarships, the Special Olympics, supporting local law enforcement/youth activities, our Giving Kids an Edge program, Hunger Outreach and various other fundraising efforts. One particularly rewarding event was the purchase of hundreds of turkeys for distribution to local families who needed the additional support for their Thanksgiving feast.

The Foundation board is comprised of Binghamton area business professionals and includes membership from local sports teams such as the Binghamton Senators and the Binghamton Mets.  The Foundation provides the organizational and financial structure for the Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame. Fundraising occurs year round with our primary efforts being auctions held during the hockey and baseball seasons from which revenue is generated for our scholarship programs.
